BSEP 2003-04 Adult School and Early Childhood Spending Summaries

BERKELEY ADULT SCHOOL Allocation: $21,450

  • Student Worker Project (hrly Teacher & hrly Student Workers): to provide job experience for students, to assist teachers with special projects.
  • Academic Computer Lab (hrly Teacher, Hardware & Software): to provide individualized, computer-assisted instruction (both MAC and PC) for students in the literacy and high school programs.
  • Art Materials: to provide a broad variety of art experiences, promoting creative thought, risk-taking, decision-making, and enhancing self-esteem.
  • "News for You" Subscription: to provide a weekly newspaper, written at a 4th-5th grade reading level, to supplement the social science, English, and GED curriculum.
  • Literacy Software: to support students' literacy and research skills via literacy software.
  • Computer Upgrades: to upgrade three computers in the Academic Department with additional memory, new mice, and printers.
  • Video Equipment Upgrades: to provide students with the opportunity to learn to use basic video and digital equipment, using a new video and digital still camera.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Allocation: $56,760

  • Instructional Specialist - Dance/Movement (.15 FTE): to provide weekly dance/movement classes, focusing on rhythm, balance, and enjoyment.
  • Instructional Technician - Computers (hrly): to support the classroom computers and assist teachers in selecting and utilizing appropriate instructional hardware and software.
  • Library Bookbag Program (hrly Teacher & hrly Instructional Assistant): to promote early literacy and love of reading via circulating bags of books for children to take home to read with their families.
  • Art Instruction (contract): Habitot children's program will provide an artist to facilitate creative art activities with the children.
  • Field Trips/Visiting Programs: to provide transportation and admission fees so children may visit and explore our community. Trips and visiting programs will compliment the curriculum in science, literature, the arts, and cultural awareness.
  • Parent Education Program (contract): to provide monthly parent workshops lead by a psychologist, focused on developing parenting skills and providing parents a forum for discussing parenting issues.
