School Information

Built against a gentle curving hillside, Cragmont was designed with child-frendliness in mind; from its rich, inviting color scheme to its generous playground and playing fields. Inside, classrooms are lit by broad bay windows, while upstairs the library boasts an extensive collection of reference, non-fiction and literature as well as a large outdoor deck with a view that offers a panoramic lesson in Bay Area geography.

Cragmont is transforming the quality of math and reading instruction. Cragmont has approached its re-opening as an opportunity to explore innovations and improvements in elementary education. As the school was reborn at a time when the state began to lower class sizes in grades K-3, we were provided with an exciting opportunity to transform our method of instruction. "To cater to the diverse learning styles of our students, we have expanded our methods to include not only teacher presentation to the group, but significant chunks of time have been allotted for small group instruction. We believe this emphasis on small group learning combined with the technical advances that have been made in literacy instruction over the past two decades will allow all Cragmont students to be reading at grade level by third grade. In mathematics, we are on our way to a model balanced program which uses Saxon Primary math as a foundation. WE are combining additional techniques in concept development and symbol-visual development to create a program that will meet the needs of all students," explains former Principal Jason Lustig.

Cragmont is reinvigorating arts in education. Cragmont has returned to the arts in a big way over the past three years. Our stimulating arts program includes visual arts, dance and music, and all students receive a minimum of two hours of arts instruction from specialists in the field every week. Cragmont also brings in approximately 10 professional multi-cultural arts performances for students during the school year, including drama, dance, music and story-telling. In addition to these exciting programs, classroom teachers regularly include art extensions in their lessons.

At Cragmont, we value learning as a community. Living and learning in a community is important at Cragmont. Our conflict management system includes peer mediation, where third, fourth, and fifth grade students help lower class students to talk out their problems, how to be better listeners and how to better express themselves. In addition, we have implemented a social skills building program called Second Step, which includes a focus on empathy and anger management and cooperative learning as a part of every classroom. These components as well as others help students to develop two of our core values; a strong sense of self and a feeling of belonging to a community. And because our community is rapidly becoming more multi-cultural, we offer a Spanish/English Language Immersion program. This program allows English-speaking students to learn Spanish and Spanish-speaking students to learn English in the same classroom. The goal is to graduate fifth graders who are fluent in two languages.

Cragmont's new and improved facility provides safety, beauty, and efficiency. The new building combines aesthetic beauty with daily technical needs. Classroom design maximizes space with built-in cabinetry on three walls, an oversized white board, a computer station and a large carpeted area. Curved corners in the hallway help create the necessary space for large class movement and display of student work. The library is large and stunning, easily shelving over 10,000 books, and has an incredible sky deck attached. Kindergartners enjoy their own play yard and benefit from both shared and exclusive classroom space.

As you can see, Cragmont is in pursuit of a new standard of education. We offer an incredible elementary school experience in which students are given the support to work at their full potential.

Come Visit! You have to see Cragmont to believe it!
