Events

Berkeley Unified has planned many events to introduce new parents to Berkeley's schools.

School Visiting Hours (Horas de Visitas Escolares en Espanol)-- From November 17 to December 17, and January 5 to February 4, the schools will be open to visitors on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Since each school has different hours, and they sometimes have events that preclude visitors, please call the school before visiting. School contact information is available on the directory page, half-way down.
Kindergarten Nights (Noches de Kinder en Espanol) -- Each elementary school will host a kindergarten night in January where parents will have a chance to visit the school, meet teachers and the principal, and discuss curriculum. Kindergarten nights are a great opportunity to ask questions! Although the nights will be mainly directed at kindergarten families, all new families are welcome.
Kindergarten Fair (Feria Informativa) -- December 5th, 2009, the district will host a fair with representatives from many district services and from each school. Additionally, there will be a presentation on the district's school assignment process. If you want to get information about the Berkeley public elementary schools and district services all in one stop, please come to the fair! This year, the fair will be at LeConte School from 10 am to 1 pm.

Enrollment Procedures

Parents of students who are entering Berkeley's elementary schools (grades kindergarten through 5th) must submit a Parent Preference Form listing school preferences, along with the student's birth certificate and three original proofs of Berkeley residency. All proofs must be imprinted with the name, date and Berkeley address of the parent/guardian.

The three proofs of Berkeley residency must be recent (less than two months old) and must have the same address and parent/guardian's name.

THREE total, ONE must be a utility from category, “d”, TWO from the following list of documentation: Please note all items cannot be from category, "4"

a) California Driver’s License or ID
b) Bank statement
c) Action letter from Social Services, a letter from the State Office for Medi-Cal, a letter from the employer on company letterhead or a paycheck stub
d) PG&E bill, phone bill (non-cellular), EBMUD bill, garbage bill or cable bill (Bundled services are considered to be one proof from this category)

NOTE: At least one proof of residency must be a utility bill (PG & E, EBMUD, Telephone, Garbage, Cable or Land-line phone).

Parents may request any elementary school in the District; however, priority will be given to families who live in the school's assignment zone.
