School Information
Longfellow Middle School is a safe and nurturing environment for successful student learning. Because of our small size, just 475 students, and strong curriculum, Longfellow students receive more personalized attention. Strong family participation results in many fun and unique community-building events such as talent shows, an annual winter trip to the mountains, and family nights with student performances and food.
Here are some of the highlights:
Academic Enrichment: Every child is challenged to do their very best. All 8th grade students are in an algebra course. We provide enrichment classes to students who need additional support with academics, as well as elective courses such as Art, Spanish, Drama, Dance, Computers, and Publishing. Teachers at Longfellow participate in a variety of staff development programs including GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design), and the DiME (Diversity in Mathematics Education) Project.
Above and beyond the school-day curriculum, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of specialized academic support groups such as the Berkeley Scholars to CAL program, after-school homework centers, and the ELL homework center for English Language Learners. For the 2004-2005 school, Longfellow is a recipient of the GEAR UP grant, a state program that provides professional development for teachers and parents to help prepare students to be ambitious about college.
Extended Day Program: Serving over one third of the school population, Longfellow's extended day program offers both academic support and enrichment. Students have the opportunity to participate in Homework Centers with tutors from UC Berkeley, organized team sports , as well as dance, arts, and music. This program is open until 6:00 pm. The fees are sliding scale and scholarships are available.
Facilities: Students play, dance, and learn in a spacious environment with a gym, library, science and computer laboratories, art studios and newly renovated classrooms. The historic theater has been renovated to include state-of-the-art lighting, sound system, and theater seating for 450. Exhibit cases throughout the school allow students to display their artistic work and technology projects. Longfellow is a participant in the Enhancing Education Through Technology grant which provided technology upgrades and professional development for staff.
Music Program: Students at Longfellow participate in an excellent Band and/or Orchestra,as well as BUSD's only middle school Steel Drum Band and Jazz Band. All groups are open to all students!
Nutrition and Gardening: As a participating school in the Linking Education and Food (LEAF) Grant and in the California Nutrition Network, Longfellow students enjoy the benefits of cooking and gardening instructors as well as enhanced nutrition education in both science and physical education classes. Students also participate in cooking and gardening in the after-school program. Longfellow was the pilot site for the well-received International Marketplace where students choose from over 15 different entrees and have a free trip to the salad bar.
Sports: Longfellow has a wide variety of interscholastic sports teams that compete in a local league. Teams include volleyball, basketball, softball, flag football, and soccer.
